Toasting bread in the toaster is the most common practice to get perfect slices of toast for breakfast, but is there another way? Can toast be made in the oven? How to make toast in the oven? Here is a step by step instruction on how to make toast in the oven.

A piece of toast is one of everyone’s favorite breakfast treats. It gives you great versatility – you can coat it with any spread and enjoy a combination of flavors and textures. Perfect toast is brown and crispy, crunchy and chewy. It can also be used as a side at any meal – with soups as a crouton, with stews and other cooked food, as a snack, etc.

Almost any sort of bread can be toasted in the oven since you’re putting pieces of bread on a baking pan or ovens wire, but if you’re using a toaster avoid soft and moist sorts of bread.

If you don’t have a toaster or you just want to try another method of preparing a toast, you can try it with the oven. As we just mentioned, bread can be put on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper (never use wax paper in the oven, and here is why!) or directly on oven wire.

How do I toast bread in the oven?

There are two ways how to make toast in the oven: for the fastest method put pieces of bread on a wire directly under the oven heater and heat them until they turn brown.

If you need a bigger amount of toast put pieces of bread on a baking pan. It’s ok that pieces of bread are one next to another, but don’t put one on top of the other. If they overlap, some pieces of bread won’t toast. 

Put the oven rack in the middle position, so the bread toasts evenly, and preheat the oven to 350 degrees Fahrenheit (180 degrees Celsius). Put the baking sheet in the oven and heat bread for about 5 minutes.

Don’t open the oven door while heating bread, just look through the glass is it turning brown. If you’re using frozen bread, just prolong the baking time for 2 minutes. If you want to add a little taste to your oven toast, simply spread a bit of butter on the bread before heating.

After 5 minutes, take out the baking pan and flip over pieces of bread. Heat them for another 5 minutes. After heating bread for 5 minutes for every side, your oven toast will be ready to use.

Is a toaster oven better than a toaster?

Toasters are a faster way to get a toast – toast will be ready in 1 to 4 minutes, depending on the setting, while the oven needs 10 minutes to heat pieces of bread. The toaster will brown your toast more evenly and it will be more crunchy, but oven toast also has its advantages. While toaster can be used only for bread, you can put in the oven bread brushed with butter, covered in cheese, or with any other additional ingredient. Both kinds of toast are equally tasty, but which will you prefer depends on your personal preferences.
