It can be confusing when the recipe you’re using calls for different kinds of measurements – for example, you need 250 ml of milk, 5 ounces of flour, and a cup of strawberries. It’s easier to measure ingredients with a kitchen scale, but if your recipe calls for one cup of strawberries, you need to know how many strawberries are in a cup? How should you measure it? Today we’re answering this frequently asked question.
Cups are used as a measurement method in cooking and baking. One cup is equal to 250 ml (metric system) or 8 (in some cases 8.5) fluid ounces in the imperial system of measurement. It is easy to measure liquid and dry ingredients, but it’s a little bit more complicated when it comes to fruit. Whole fruit, specifically strawberries, in this case, does not fill all the whole volume of the cup, but there are parts that are filled with air – something like air gaps.
How many strawberries are in a cup? Especially if we talk in terms of whole fruit, not fruit juice, and not mashed or chopped fruit. How to measure it?
- One cup of strawberries contains 8 large strawberries.
- One cup of strawberries equals 5 ounces of fresh strawberries.
- 8 large strawberries equal 16 medium or 24 small whole strawberries.
- If you want to make a strawberry puree instead of using the whole fruit, one cup of strawberries equals half of cup of strawberry puree.
One pound of whole strawberries equals 2 ¾ cups of sliced strawberries or 3 ¾ cups whole strawberries. If you’re measuring in pints, one pint of fresh strawberries is equal to 12 large fruits. If you have medium-sized strawberries double the amount (24 medium strawberries) and if you have bought small strawberries triple them (36 small strawberries).
Tip: If you decide to use another kind of berries instead of strawberries you can use it as a substitute in the 1:1 ratio. If your recipe calls for 1 cup of strawberries you can also use 1 cup of blueberries or raspberries.
How many cups are in a thing of strawberries?
As we mentioned in the previous section, one pound of strawberries equals 3.5 or 4 cups of whole fruits when it comes to measuring. This amount of fruit weighs approximately 4 to 5 ounces. If you cut a pound of strawberries you’ll get 2.7 cups, and if you buy one plastic container of strawberries (a pint) and slice them, you’ll end up with two cups of strawberries that weigh about ¾ pound.
How Do You Measure 1 cup of strawberries?
One cup of strawberries will have a different weight depending is it fruit whole, sliced or mashed. We already said that 8 large strawberries (16 medium or 24 small) equal one cup, but let’s see how much do they weigh in grams.
One cup of whole strawberries weighs144 grams. If strawberries are sliced, a cup of strawberries will weigh 166 grams. If you make strawberry puree, a cup will weigh 232 grams.
Try to remember – one cup of whole fruit approximately equals ½ cup of fruit puree.
Do fresh and frozen strawberries weigh the same?
Yes. Many would assume that frozen fruit weighs more than fresh, but that is a common misconception. The amount of water in the fruit will weigh the same when it is frozen like it would weigh when it’s liquid. One cup of fresh strawberries equals one cup of frozen strawberries.
