In order to keep grapes fresh do not wash them before putting them in the refrigerator. Wash grapes later, when you’re ready to use them. Washing grapes before refrigerating could drastically decrease their shelf-life.

Fun fact – most people make mistakes when washing grapes – and it looks like such a simple procedure, though. Grapes should be left 10 to 15 minutes to soak in water, so they release all bacteria and pesticides. After soaking put grapes under a tap water stream.

Don’t put grapes in a bowl when you want to put them into the refrigerator, as most people do – put them in a perforated plastic bag or an airtight container. Grapes easily absorb odors, so if you’re storing onions or some smelly cheese in your fridge, grapes could overtake their aroma.

Remove all molded, bruised, or spoiled seeds before putting grapes in the fridge, as all the healthy seeds could easily spoil quicker when they’re in touch with bad grapes.

How can you tell if grapes have gone bad?

It’s easy to spot spoiled grapes – they tend to be really soft when you touch them, they can look mushy or leak the juices. Also, the grape’s skin will be wrinkled and mold can form on its orbs. If grapes look stale or rotten, throw them away – you can eat grapes with all signs of spoiling, besides mold. Of course, those grapes won’t have the taste like fresh ripe grapes.

Another sign that the grapes have gone bad is the smell. Grapes naturally have a sweet fruity aroma. If grapes smell sour or have notes of vinegar or spoiled wine (remember the smell of wine?), they’re started fermenting, and that is the secure sign they are going bad.

Tip: You can still use grapes that have gone bad or it is not that fresh as you would like! Make the most of old grapes by making raisins, using a dehydrator or your oven.
