Can you put aluminum foil in the oven?

When baking there is always confusion about what of the additional things can go in the oven. We already saw that wax paper should never be exposed to heat, but how about aluminum foil? Can you put aluminum foil in the oven? Let’s find out.

Aluminum foil is a paper-thin sheet of aluminum metal. The sheet of aluminum is less than 0.2 mm thick and this type of foil has various purposes. It’s frequently used in cooking and baking, and also for packaging and storing foods.

So, can you put aluminum foil in the oven? The answer is yes. Aluminum foil will give great results while grilling, but it can also be used to line baking sheets.

The only way you shouldn’t be using aluminum foil in the oven is as a cover for the bottom of the oven, to catch spills. Putting aluminum foil on the bottom of the oven could cause heat damage. If you want to prevent the oven from getting dirty while baking, wrap aluminum foil on the oven rack beneath the dish you’re baking. The foil will catch spoils before they get to the oven bottom.

How do you use aluminum foil in the oven?

Aluminum foil has two sides – a bright shiny side and a dull side. Which one of them should be up when placed in the oven? It doesn’t matter are you baking food covered or wrapped in aluminum foil, some sources say that the shiny side should always be down, facing the food, while the dull side should be up. The reason the shiny side should be down is that it’s more reflective and reflects heat.

After a lot of experimenting with both sides of aluminum foil, we’ve come to the conclusion that it doesn’t matter which side you turn up and which down. The bright and dull sides of aluminum foil exist due to the manufacturing process and they do not affect food preparation in any way.

Can aluminum foil catch on fire in the oven?

No, aluminum foil is made out of thin metal and it won’t catch on fire in the oven. Metals do not burn so easily. The average temperature of an electric oven is 400 to 500 degrees Fahrenheit, and for aluminum to burn is required at least double the temperature. However, aluminum foil could start a fire when put in a microwave oven and therefore it shouldn’t be used there.

Is aluminum foil toxic when heated?

When the aluminum foil is exposed to high temperatures, it releases aluminum into the food, which then ends up in your body when food is consumed. Research has shown that these are not small amounts at all and that they can seriously endanger health.

For the same reason, you should not heat food in aluminum foil, and you should not wrap fresh hot food in it. If the foil comes in direct contact with hot food, its heat affects the release of aluminum into the food, so you will get a meal with a very unhealthy additive. In doing so, it can spoil the taste of food. However, aluminum foil is not dangerous to health if cold or room temperature food is placed in it.
